Gym is boring? Pick up a sport!
Deepika Padukone, a popular Indian actor said “When I was growing up my father said to me, To be the best, always remember the three D’s – Discipline, Dedication and Determination. Follow your heart. Do what you are passionate about.”
And my friend used to say, ‘I always push hard at work and in personal life. That comes from my sports background. In sports, pushing yourselves that little extra bit makes a huge difference in your game’.
Sports teach you so many values for life and Deepika’s three D’s are for sure among them!
While discipline is essential to sports, it is essential to your character too.
I remember once my ex-boss told me his story of coaching tennis players. He told me ‘I watched some very talented players who practiced poorly or don’t even show up for practices. The attitude of these talented players was: what is the point in working so hard in practice when I play well enough in games? I also watched some average talented players being very focused, who were there early everyday in the court. And as I watched over the long-term, the talented ones’ physical conditioning and stamina suffered and their specific sport skills stagnated while their fellow average players continued to get better and better.’
Discipline is an attitude that leads to habits that are responsible for achieving your goals. This needs hard work, no doubt. It means doing the exercises and push-ups that we find boring and wears us out physically so we can be in the best possible shape and health.
Michael Jordan was one of the best basketball players of all time and was known by his coaches and team mates for his incredible dedication to excel at everything he committed to do.
Michael Jordan talks about his dedication, “Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I led you to believe it was easy, when it wasn’t. Maybe I made you think my highlight started at the free-throw line, and not in the gym. Maybe I made you think every shot I took, was a game winner. That my game was based on flash, and not fire. Maybe its my fault that you didn’t see that failure gave me strength, that my pain was my motivation. Maybe I led you to believe that basketball was a God given gift, and not something I worked for… every single day of my life.”
In sports it is very important to establish goals and it is more important being committed and dedicated to achieve these goals. Where else can you learn this in your life?
I’m going to pick Aimee Mullins as I think she is such a great example of Determination.
Aimee is a famous American athlete. She is very special because she was born with a medical condition that resulted in the amputation of both of her lower legs but this didn’t stop her from achieving some great milestones that are difficult even for a fully-abled person to achieve. She is a Paralympian, catwalk model, actress and activist with a passion for sports. Mullins is a a great example for how the determination of the human spirit can overcome even physical obstacles in life.
Now, Do you think you have an excuse?
